Blackwood is a native hardwood that grows in South Australia, Tasmania, and NSW. It has rich coloured heartwood that ranges from light to dark browns and sometimes red streaks. The sapwood is significantly paler and a light blonde-brown. It contains high levels of tannin. It is used mostly in interior applications such as veneers and furniture ? especially when the grain contains fiddleback. It is easy to work with and commonly used in carving, turning, musical instruments and boatbuilding.
