Camphor Laurel is a heavily featured blonde timber that has a distinct camphor smell. Its colour ranges from pale yellow and brown in the sapwood to honey with brown or red overtones in the heartwood with swirl patterning. It is prized for furniture making, turning and carving. Originally from Taiwan, Japan and China Camphor Laurel was introduced to Australia in the 1800s and now grows in NSW and Queensland. It is naturally repellent to moths and other insects making it excellent for making cupboards and storage units. It is desired for countertops, bowls and cutting boards as it has antibacterial qualities that have been shown to reduce microbial growth.
