Once prevalent in New South Wales and Queensland, Australian Red Cedar was known as ?red gold? by the early European settlers who very nearly logged it into extinction. Unusual for an Australian native, It is a deciduous tree that grows best in areas with high light levels. The heartwood of the Australian Red Cedar is consistent in colouring and ranges from a deep red to a soft red. The sapwood is paler in colour. Its growth rings are often quite visible. It has a distinct and pleasant odour. Australian Red Cedar is easy to work with and quite soft. When it contains fiddleback feature, it is popular for veneers. Commonly used for furniture making, carving, decorative veneers and panelling. It has also been used in boat building.
